Our Newest Approach to Combating Climate Change: A Self-Imposed Carbon Tax

Global warming poses a serious threat to our planet. Carbon dioxide (CO2), the major source of global warming pollution, has reached dangerously high levels in the Earth’s atmosphere largely due to the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, transportation, and manufacturing. As a result, Earth’s surface temperatures are increasing drastically and global temperatures are skyrocketing.

Here at Seventh Generation, one of our approachs to help combat climate change is a self-imposed internal carbon tax. We enforce an internal fee of $12 per ton of CO2 and use the generated revenue to increase operational efficiencies, purchase renewable fuels, purchase renewable electricity for our facilities, manufacturing partners, and distribution partners, and, as a last resort, purchase carbon offsets and RECs.

This act serves as an incentive for our sourcing department to consider suppliers with a lower carbon footprint, as well as an incentive for us to reach our 2020 sustainability goals.

As a mission driven business who believes that business can be a force for good in the world, Seventh Generation strives to leave the world a better place. Our 2020 sustainability goals are based on an overall desire to nurture nature, enhance health, transform commerce, and build communities. Some of our aspirations are to:

  • Source sustainably
  • Produce zero waste
  • Choose plants, not petroleum
  • Create and use energy sustainably

Above all else, we strive continuously to care today for the next seven generations of tomorrows. Please click here to learn more about our 2020 sustainability priorities.
