We all know that fruits & veggies are the way to a healthy, balanced diet – but many of us don’t get our required amount in each day. Our Generation Good moms are here to help! One great way to get your family excited about seasonal produce while also supporting your local community: join a farm share.

While farm shares have existed for years, they have become more popular as the sustainable food movement has grown. Also known as community supported agriculture, or CSA, this food sharing model offers urban residents the opportunity to have direct access to high quality, fresh produce grown locally by regional farmers. As a member of a CSA, you're investing in a "share" of the harvest from a regional farmer, which absorbs some of the risk and helps with upfront costs. Best of all, you get to know your farmer and as produce changes with the season, you can unleash your creativity as you cook. 

Eating locally is a large part of living a healthy lifestyle, not only because fresh food has the most nutrients for your body but because it helps to reduce your carbon footprint. The less time between the food getting from the harvest point into your home, the better!

We asked our Generation Good parents how they tap into their local farm networks. Here’s what they had to say:

“About once a month, my family and I will go to local farms to pick blueberries and strawberries! I love supporting local farmers and I love knowing exactly where the fruit came from!” – Olivia D

“Unfortunately we do not have a garden, but we are very thankful to have great local farmers to buy from. We live in a very rural area that doesn't have a sharing network, but our local farmers are aware that harsh chemicals affect our food and our health and we love their fruits and veggies!” – Tara H

“Living in a condo only allows me to have an herb garden in my patio. However, I love visiting my local farmer's market every Saturday where I get to sample the produce before purchasing. The advantage of the market is that I purchase produce from the local area.” – Christian C

“We use a CSA that we do a work share with, but supplement with tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, chard, beans, and herbs from our home garden.”-Melanie C.

“I do a CSA every other week and I love it. The surprise of not knowing what you'll get is great, plus it has forced me to eat a lot of vegetables that I might not otherwise have tried.” -Laurie K
