‘Foodscaping’, defined as landscaping using edible plants, is growing in popularity – and for good reason. While landscaping increases curb appeal and adds beauty to yard space, foodscaping helps incorporate homegrown foods into families’ diets. 

As with any type of gardening project, knowing what vegetation works well in your area is key. Having a wide range of color, texture, height and growing season will all help ensure your project goes beyond the typical vegetable garden, working itself into your landscaping needs. It takes planning, time, and continuous effort – but well worth it for the reward. 

Here’s why we love the idea: 

• You know your food. Planting and harvesting your own fruits, vegetables and herbs means you control what’s going in – and what’s staying clear – of the food you eat. It’s also a great way to help children understand where their food comes from! 
• Edible plants can be just as beautiful. The bright colors from fresh fruits and vegetables deliver the same impact as traditional landscaping plants & shrubs. Many edible plants also produce stunning flowers (that you can eat!). 
• Pay for plants, save on groceries. If you’re going to add and maintain plants as part of a landscaping need, edible varieties can play double-duty. Whether your yard is filled with traditional or edible plants, generally, the same expenses are involved. Foodscaping takes your money further, allowing you to step outside and harvest produce you’d otherwise have to purchase. 
• Help decrease your carbon footprint. On average, each household in the US produces 48 tons of greenhouse gases. A switch to growing food at home means less greenhouse gas emissions from farming, processing and transporting produce to your local store.
