The Results of Our 2016 B Corporation Impact Assessment

Being a B Corporation

Since our founding in 1988, Seventh Generation has been dedicated to creating home and personal care products that are safe to use, better for the planet, and that really work. Based in Vermont, we’re proud to be a B Corporation. B Corps are certified to be better for workers, better for communities and better for the environment.

Every two years, B Corp companies are required to recertify and participate in an onsite audit called the B Impact Assessment. This assessment ensures that these companies are living up to their commitment to be better for workers, communities, and the environment. Last year, Seventh Generation was selected for the B Impact Assessment and we’re excited to share the results of the assessment with you.

Our 2016 B Impact Assessment Score

The B Impact Assessment is a member performance requirement which rates companies on a scale from 0-200, with a minimum score of 80 needed to meet the requirement. In 2016, Seventh Generation received a high score of 120.1 -- which puts us well past the minimum requirement. While we continue to be proud of this rating, it is worth acknowledging that this score is approximately 5 points lower than the last assessment we participated in back in 2014.

A slightly lower score than 2014 and our desire to constantly improve how we work has us focused on improving some key areas heading into the next assessment cycle in 2018.

We Are Committed to Continuous Improvement

Supply Chain: We are committed to deep collaboration with our manufacturers, and will continue to focus on reducing their overall Green House Gas (GHG) Emissions, increasing their adoption of renewables, and supporting a healthy environment for workers. Throughout our 28 years of business, we’ve learned that success for our partners is success for us.

Documenting Our Conservation Efforts at Headquarters: While we’ve had extensive employee engagement around waste diversion, energy efficiency, and carbon reduction, we haven’t tracked our impact as closely as we’d like. There is an opportunity for us to better track and demonstrate the great improvements we’ve achieved while making our Burlington headquarters a zero-waste facility.

Continued Improvement Around Diversity & Inclusion: As stated by Steph Lowe, our Director of Talent Development: “2016 was a year of intensive focus on building a culture of inclusivity. Our Inclusivity Committee expanded to include the entire executive leadership team, a sign of the importance of the effort. We engaged the Board and then the entire company through a full day of focus on inclusivity at our annual Company Advance…. the gap in gender experience, especially, took many by surprise.” To date, we’ve seen some early improvement, specifically around closing the gender pay gap. With Unilever’s systems support, we now have a mechanism in place to monitor and ensure we maintain parity over time.

What Lies Ahead

We encourage our community to stay tuned, and to keep us honest! We remain dedicated to protecting the health of the next seven generations and to our commitments as a certified B Corp.
