Girls with Backpacks

It's that time of year again, back to school.  As mothers, we want to make sure we give our children -- and the planet -- the healthiest start possible. That means healthy snacks and lunches, school supplies made from recycled materials, and reusable water bottles. But one thing we often overlook is the type of cosmetics our daughters put in their bags and backpacks.

Many girls start experimenting with cosmetics at a young age. They, and their moms and dads, need to know that some conventional products are made with ingredients that include toxic chemicals. Our friends at the Campaign For Safe Cosmetics provide a comprehensive list of over-the-counter cosmetics and their ingredients! Several members of Congress recently introduced the Safe Cosmetics Act, legislation that would phase out toxic ingredients in our make-up and other personal care products that have been linked to cancer, birth defects, and developmental harm. This back-to-school season, take time to sit with your daughters and examine the personal care products they use, then check out yours too.

One more thing. I'm a strong believer in organic cotton tampons, like those made by Seventh Generation. Also try our non-chlorine bleached pads to make a total switch to a green personal care routine! Let us know what your daughters think about all of this.

We would love to hear the results of your conversations with your daughters!
