Washing Outdoor Gear

I work for an outdoor trip leading company that washes life jackets and tents in buckets with non-biodegradable dish soap and then dumps the buckets out into the street. I imagine this runs right into the local waterways. I feel this is unacceptable. What are some alternatives that I can propose to my boss?
