Using Seventh Generation Chlorine Free Bleach as a toy disinfectant

Hi, I used to use regular bleach diluted in water to disinfect household items but now that I have a 6 month old that puts everything in her mouth I do not want to use regular bleach. I was happy to find and purchase your Free & Clear Chlorine Free Bleach but the directions say for best result, use in laundry. Is it ok to use this product diluted with water in a bucket to clean plastic toys? I always rinse with clean water after soaking. Thanks! Also if this isn't appropriate what product to you suggest to disinfect plastic toys. Thanks again!

bleach for disinfecting toys

You only need to put a very small amount of bleach in a tub of water to clean washable toys. Then let them air dry.

disinfecting children's toys

I am an early childhood educator and used to use bleach too, but was always looking for a better alternative. I have begun washing toys in soapy water, rinsing then spraying them with regular hydrogen peroxide. You can get a spray bottle top and simply attach it to the original peroxide bottle. You can also run many toys through a hot water dishwasher cycle.

We had this same issue

We have two young kids and ran into this issue. Vinegar is great, but it turns out it is usually sold at a dilution of 5% (you can check on the bottle) which I read is not an effective dilution for disinfecting. Here is what we have done:
1. For plush toys, the dryer or freezer
2. For toys that can be boiled or steamed, boil or steam them.
3. For everything else, clean it well with soap and water, and then use 7th Gen's disinfecting spray (with thyme oil) and let it air out well. Wash with vinegar or soap and water afterward if needed.

We also found another product at whole foods called 2AM miracle that can be sprayed on soft surfaces, but I am not sure how well it actually disinfects.

Good luck!

desinfecting toys

I use regular white vinegar to desinfect toys, high chair and (almost)any surface that baby comes in contact with.

Chlorine Free Bleach and Toys

Our Chlorine Free Bleach was developed as a laundry additive and isn't classified as a disinfecting product. It won't harm the toys, though. We do have a botanical disinfecting product that could be used on your babies toys. It is called Multisurface Disinfecting Cleaner or Disinfecting Wipes. ~ Sue
