Unplugging most appliances does nothing except wear out the plug and the cord faster. Many/most appliances use so little energy that it's hard to measure when idle.

Phone chargers and laptop power cords are also large energy draws, since they don't "shut off."
This is false. It is true that some appliances use such little energy when they remain plugged in (and not on) that it is hard to measure. However there are many appliances and electronic gizmos that use a considerable amount of energy when plugged in. All appliances are different and all consume different amounts of energy though the highest consumers of these "phantom loads" are televisions, dvd players, cables boxes, coffee makers (those new keurig single cup makers-HUGE amounts of energy), speakers, and microwave ovens. In fact last year alone the households of the US used more energy to keep their entertainment systems plugged in than when they actually turned them on!
Got a bunch of plugs in outlet expanders? Grab a surge protector and shut it off when not in use.
Unplug any appliance when not in use and watch your utility bill drop on average $200 a yr.
