It should be noted that bottled water is very unregulated and in many places, may simply be tap water put into plastic bottles.
Save the plastic waste with a household filter if desired (minerals in tap water are often important nutritionally) and use a reusable, BPA-free water bottle.
If you are interested in learning some more about the bottled water/tap water industry you should see the movie Flow. Their website is www.flowthefilm.com. I borrowed it from the library.
The taste of water differs depending on where you live. I grew up in Columbus, OH and grew up drinking the public water there. to me the water taste fine as that is what I am use to. I then went to Dayton for a few years and the water there in my opinion is terrible. It is a different public water system, different chemicals are needed to get the water to the proper levels safe for drinking. I still to this day will not drink water there when visiting family. I went back to Columbus area and had a well. I then started drinking bottled water or none at all. Off to Pittsburgh and back to city water, this was more like Columbus water and I was back on the tap. I am now back in OH and in the country. I am also back to a well and drinking bottled water when I drink water. I am also surrounded by fields where I know they spray chemicals on the crops. This is one reason I do not drink the water as I do know the chemicals will be in the ground and maybe in my water. I know people that grew up out here and to them the well water taste fine as that is what they grew up on.
Also something to consider, some bottled water is just tap water in bulk. Aldi sells bottled water that is Buffalo, NY tap water. (it says it right on the bottle)
I found that drinking tap water with ice in it, takes away the taste you do not like. I personally do not taste any weird flavor in our tap water and prefer to drink it over any bottled water. I also found that sometimes the container I use to bring my own water, affects the taste too. So think about these things before you go buy some fancy filter.
