Green Cleaning

Making the switch to stainless steel and glass containers is a huge step towards helping your family live a toxin-free life, but it doesn't stop there. Have you ever stopped to think about the products we use to get our containers sparkling clean?

After the Second World War, as a result of enormous government subsidies for the petroleum and chemical industries, petrochemicals and plastics became the building blocks of our economy. Unfortunately, since we figured out how to use petrochemicals to remove dirt, grease, and odors and to boost shine, they have wound up in many conventional cleaning products.

Why spend money on new health-conscious stainless steel and glass containers when our food and bodies are coming into direct contact with whatever was used to clean them?

Luckily there are companies like Seventh Generation that have created plant-based alternatives to help us avoid hazardous toxins in our home products.

Making non-toxic choices for your children as they head back to school is a no-brainer. When I had my first son I vowed to use eco-friendly products in an effort to keep my family toxin free. As we head back to school each September, I make sure the following on are my shopping list:

  • Free and Clear Natural Dish Liquid: This plant-derived dish soap effectively fights stubborn grease, grime, and dirt left in your child's stainless steel and glass containers and thermoses. It's also hypoallergenic so it's gentle on skin.
  • Free and Clear All Purpose Cleaner: When trying to rid our countertops of sticky fingerprints, my family uses this non-toxic, VOC-free formula – I find it works great on all surfaces of my home from marble to granite to stainless steel!
  • 4X Laundry Detergent: At the end of the week when it comes time to wash lunch containers, cloth napkins and the kid's clothes, I stick to Seventh Generation's 4X formula. Its plant-based, multiple-enzyme formula fights the toughest stains, is non-toxic and hypoallergenic, and I get 66 loads out of just one bottle.
