Organic Food vs. Regular Brand Name

I struggle sometimes over whether I should always buy organic food. I've read about the dirty dozen but am tempted to also buy organic processed foods. Does anyone else have a similar experience? I've found a website www.eco-friendlyliving.com that posts some information about organic food but would like to learn more from others.

Thoughts

I've always tried to have a decent balance between organic and brand name, but after reading this (and the comments, thanks everyone btw) I think I'm going completely organic (or at least going to give it a good try). Thanks everyone for making my decision a little easier.

It is hard- I feel your pain

It takes me like twice as long to shop sense I went organic. Its such a hard thing to do on a tight budget. All the other comments that people have posted are saying great things but they arent really answering the question; what do you do when you are living pay check to pay check trying hard to save money and do what is right and healthy for your family.
I just do the best I can, my husband and I came to the agreement that we would buy logcal and organic as much as we can but if there is like a 2 dollar difference then maybe just buy the non organic. Now when it comes to beef, vegis/fruits and most dairy we do always buy organic but processed foods are a bit different.
I find it harder to buy some of those types of foods organic because they are so expensive. But having to think about it so much makes me really spend alot of my time in the store each time I shop.
One cool thing Ive started doing is joined my local farmers connection- you order online - and they bring the food thats grown locally to a certain location once a week! so you can get the farmers market food during the winter!
Anyways I just wanted you to know that you are not alone in you struggle -

Smart Shopping

I totally agree with buying organic whenever possible. I would argue that it is probably more Earth Friendly to be buying organic produce in season, instead of it importing from many thousands of miles away . Also, to buy in bulk whenever possible. We buy many organic products at Costco and they come in bulk. I feel it is more important too to know your farmer and to support the small scale farmers whenever possible. Our food choices are very important. I would rather support our family farmers and support them in their move to be eventually organic. At the same time, I see many people buy all organic produce/items and spend a small fortune. I cannot afford to do this at this time. I would rather grow as much of my own food, buy locally, and follow the seasons in my eating habits.

The only way to go!

I agree with prius06...it IS imperitive to buy organic whenever possible. BUT be careful and always check ingredients...some products, especially processed foods, are labled organic but have some ingredients that are not organic...and those few items may be GMO (like corn or soy). Processed foods are generally less healthy than whole foods, but when they start with quaility organic ingredients they are a not a bad choice.

I work hard to pre cook foods and freeze them so i always have something homemade on hand, but I run through that pretty quickly, so I always have something easy to whip up (or simply heat up)

Hope this was helpful!

SUPPORT ORGANIC!!!!!

It is imperative that you buy organic whenever possible. buying organic supports not using dangerous chemicals and hormones in our foods, but more importantly, it makes a statement AGAINST GMO FOODS!!!!! especially packaged and processed foods that are so soy based. the gmo soy industry wants to take over and gmo soy leads to estrogenic cancers! please for us vegetarians and vegans... support organic.... i'll be without a protein source without it!
plus organic tastes better!

Saving Money on Organic Food

If it is the cost that holds you back from going organic you may be interested in a blog I wrote called Organic Cents (www.organiccents.blogspot.com). I think going organic is important for health reasons (especially children) but there are lots of other reasons too: environmental, political.. www.organic.org offers a lot of information.

Organic Challenge

http://FlourSackMama.blogspot.com

Time and budgets are such a challenge for all of us these days. I have also struggled with the organic/homemade/healthy foods challenge. I think it's wonderful when we can make and freeze or can our own foods. Good for you for finding a way that works for you.

I'm an organically processed sell-out ;-)

So the temptation was too much. Sue me.

I have 2 kids, one boy nearing 12 quickly (two hollow legs) and one 8 (girl -- doesn't eat much), and a husband (big tall guy, can eat a lot) and frankly, I couldn't keep up with the family's eating desires. I would try to make the soups and freeze them, but we would eat them too quickly. Pizzas the same thing (as you can see, we're not a Raw type family). Just for my own sanity and to get the heck out of the kitchen sometimes I keep processed orgainic goods on hand to go along with the fruits, veges, meats, etc. Sometimes there's just nothing like a good ol' can of organic spaghettios to get a kid going after school.

Or a nice frozen orgainic pizza available for those nights when you've got 2 different sports' practices on opposite sides of town, a Girl Scouts meeting, and then an emergency visit to the library because that report is absolutely due tomorrow but you're just finding out about it now. Face it, in today's world, sometimes life intrudes on our best efforts to revisit the eating habits of the 19th century.

It's kind of our little compromise -- I'm happier because it's not McDonald's or loaded with HFCS and MSG and they're happy because they still get to indulge in "kid" foods.

For us, this was kind of necessary. If I'd gone all hard-nosed about everything it would have been difficult for all of us to stick with. As it is, we eat "good" most of the time with the option of eating "okay" some other times.
