Only green thumbs—or those who actually have a backyard—can grow their own food.

False. Even an apartment dweller with a black thumb can keep a mini-herb garden alive.

Growing plants organically

I am always trying to find ways to improve our impact on the Earth and to make good informed choices regarding products that we purchase. Wanting to grow vome of our fruits and veggies in our back yard became a challenge to me and since I did not own any garden implements and could not affort to go out an purchase any and I have read that tilling the soil releases CO2. So I have successfuly grown strawberries in my flower beds, cantelope and squash in the berm behind our swimming pool, sugar baby watermelon in a large flower bed, eggplant, onions and bell peppers in recycled raised beds, and every year we have a pumpkin just come up volunteer in a brush pile where we toss the previous years pumpkin. I guess my point is that you do not have to have alot of space or alot of tools to grow some of your food. Oh I also have tomatoes in the ground and in pots.

Salad and herb gardens are great in containers.

I grow all my salad veggies and herbs in large containers or barrels. I just make sure to mix half organic manure with half topsoil and use the biggest containers I can find. I grow lettuces, every sort of pepper, tomatoes, cucumbers and every herb you can imagine every year. (Peppers do especially well.) Just make sure not to crowd your tomato or pepper plants. They will still yield but the individual vegetables and friuts will be small. You can fit three or four large containers on a small sunny porch or balcony. I end up with enough tomatoes and assorted peppers for salads, fresh sauces and salsas. The herbs you don't use right away can be hung upside down in the kitchen until they dry.

Cool growing products...

Gardeners.com has some really nice user friendly items too like self watering containers and "potatoe bins" which hold soil and are reuseable. You can also often "borrow" garden space by posting on Craigslist or in your local paper. Locavores love to help each other out! There are lots of easy to grow veggies like sprinkling mesclun mix in a flower pot for an instant moveable salad in a sunny window.

Earth Boxes-a great option!

There is a new container on the market for those who don't have "green thumbs" or a backyard" called Earth Boxes. Plants grow great and can sit on an apartment porch.
