Unless you have a modern washer/dryer that automatically dispenses your fabric softener, you're probably more apt to use dryer sheets. But most dryer sheets are made from tallow, which is an animal by-product. Yuck! Instead here's how to use a non-petroleum-based, non-tallow fabric softener liquid without worrying about adding it half way through the wash... Add the liquid to a spray bottle and spray it onto a dish rag or other cloth you use specifically for this purpose. Get it nice and wet and throw it in with your wet clothes when you put them in the dryer. Viola! The animal and echo friendly "dryer cloth"! This idea courtesy of my friend Drew Sheriff who used to work at 7th Gen and heard if from a consumer. Have fun!

I'm the Packaging Project Leader in the Sourcing Department at Seventh Generation. I'm also the project manager of our Change It program with Green Peace. I moved to Vermont to be closer to nature, and my friends in Canada, but then I gave away my car to reduce my carbon footprint - so I don't see as much of either as I would like. Living in Burlington is great though. Lots of like-minded people, and a real feeling of community. I walk to work everyday, where I get to work with people who really care about the environment and want to make a difference.
