My husband and I participate in the Peace and Justice Committee at our Catholic parish and I work on behalf of those living with HIV/AIDS through my job. We've both always sought to do the best we can to enhance our community. Everyone can do something - whether they're seniors as we are now or just starting out. Find something you enjoy and contribute what you can. Every nonprofit needs volunteers of all types - from people to do things by phone to things in the field - from unskilled to skilled. Be creative. One retired lady out here had a teacher friend who mentioned a gradeschool student who was reluctant to participate because his shoes were too small. She bought him shoes. Then other teachers showed up. She now runs a group called Shoes That Fit. They get donated shoes and work with dozens of schools! Think of the difference that makes in a child's education and their future! And eventually everyone's future because an angry, hurting child is likely to turn to crime, but a child with hope looks to create a good life. The green economy offers great hope for careers for many of our youth. There was a priest who ran a radio show years ago whose slogan was, "It's better to light one little candle than to curse the darkness." It's still a good guide. A joyous year to all!
