Tell us about yourself:

I've been utterly transfixed by the natural world very nearly since birth. Growing up, it always seemed as if Nature had a never-ending supply of astonishing secrets waiting to be discovered under every rock, beneath each tree, and within every green and graceful fold. A life-long passion for science and learning has only deepened my appreciation of this infinite mystery. The more I learn, the less I know, and in this understanding is a joy I cannot describe. Over the years, I’ve come to realize as well that the natural world is a source of great spiritual power. I believe that in the sun and rain and wind and frog song, one finds the doorway to the divine. If we can summon to courage to enter, to cast off the terrible blinders of superstition and dogma and fear, and dare to open our souls to the profound beauty waiting there, Nature can show us the way home and make us whole at last. This is the yin to my yang. I believe that in rational inquiry we come closer with each question to a kind of knowing that transcends the mind to enter the heart. When truth’s marrow is scratched, the two become one, and in that union lies the wisdom that we seek. To find Nature’s sacred realm under siege, to find its magic being loosened and torn as unseeing human hands claw in ignorance at rapidly fraying edges until the fabric itself threatens to come undone, is the source of my greatest horror. Whether it’s climate change, toxic pollution, biodiversity loss, or any other environmental ill, each insult is to me a perilous sacrilege that must be stopped. Indeed, mine is a holy war of sorts and there will be no rest until it’s won, a day I believe we could easily sail to from here were it not for the sadly diminished souls and lesser intellects currently at the helm. On a more material level, I am currently living among glorious natural splendor in an undisclosed location with my wife of almost 20 years, my 10-year old daughter, and my well-aged-to-the-point-of-pickled Australian shepard, who usually sits by my feet as I write for a variety of good people within and without Seventh Generation. I am most fond in this world of fresh berries, good books, cold craft-brewed beer, rock and roll (largely but not exclusively of the altcountryrootsrockamericana variety and always turned up to 11, of course), collecting physical manifestations of strange supernatural powers and the elemental forces of Nature, listening to night sounds, walking in the woods, impeccable interior design, good breakfasts and other adventures in eating, and the gracious company of kindred spirits, who thankfully surround me in happy abundance. I am currently scheming to write the world’s best children’s novel though in my heart I know Philip Pullman already has me beat.
