I celebrated Earth Day by participating in a discussion of race, class, and environmentalism at a community event in Poughkeepsie, NY, sponsored by Vassar College. Because my son had just come out of the hospital, I was late and unprepared. In fact, I hadn’t stopped to check on the subject of the talk, let alone gather my comments prior to the trip up from New York City. My first reaction was, “Oh my god (the Pope was in town) what am I going to say?”

The most recent study from the research firm Towers Perrin showed that only 21% of employees felt engaged in their work and that fully 38% feel partially or fully disengaged.

For anyone questioning the potential cost of failing to be responsible or transparent the evidence mounts daily that those costs can be high indeed. Last week, news that Staples would discontinue purchasing paper from Singapore-based Asia Pulp & Paper Co. Ltd., one of the world's largest paper companies, showed, as the Wall Street Journal noted, that “concerns over forest destruction and global warming are having an impact on big U.S. paper buyers.”

On Monday, February 4th we arrived in Monteverde, Costa Rica for a trek through the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and the Children’s Eternal Rain Forest. The trip had been organized by Tom Newmark, President of vitamin and supplement maker New Chapter, and the founder of the Luna Nueva organic farm.
