For anyone questioning the potential cost of failing to be responsible or transparent the evidence mounts daily that those costs can be high indeed. Last week, news that Staples would discontinue purchasing paper from Singapore-based Asia Pulp & Paper Co. Ltd., one of the world's largest paper companies, showed, as the Wall Street Journal noted, that “concerns over forest destruction and global warming are having an impact on big U.S. paper buyers.”

Decisions like these help clarify the business case for corporate responsibility. They also indicate that large companies are increasingly wary of doing business with partners who could jeopardize their reputations.
