You can count the real heroes of what I call the "global detox movement" on maybe a hand and half. Because there just aren't a lot of scientific minds that have chosen to become activist as well. So we have the research community on the one side, which does the fact finding, and the advocacy community on the other, which takes this evidence and does the proselytizing. Rarely do the two meet in the kind of scientific/emotional synthesis that makes a real and lasting impact. But they do in Dr. Devra Davis, and that's a very good thing.
You can see just how good at the website for her organization, the Devra Lee Davis Charitable Foundation (DLDCF), which would appear to be the world’s first education and advocacy effort dedicated solely to finding, broadcasting, and eradicating the environmental causes of cancer.
This is tremendously important work because most people have come to see cancer as a largely preventable result of certain lifestyle choices like smoking and diet. These factors are no doubt responsible for some of the cancer that surrounds us, but many people, including Davis, believe that environmental pollution is the real reason the incidence of cancer increased 48% from 1950 to 1990.
If you want to learn the truth about this disease and why the “war” against it has failed, you need to read Davis’ newest book, The Secret History of the War on Cancer. The struggle against cancer and the fight against a chemically contaminated environment are the same thing, and it’s a war that’s only going to be won by putting the truth in everyone’s hands. That’s what Devra Lee Davis has been doing for over two decades. And that’s why we should be listening to her.
