News that bicycle production is on the rise is just one of the many interesting things I learned at www.worldcommute.com, a social networking site that encourages and tracks the use of non-motorized transportation around the world.

The site allows users to create a profile and record non-motorized trips, including daily commutes and shopping outings. A main focus is the benefits that activity can have on physical health, particularly walking or biking. The site is also planning group challenges. Check it out at www.worldcommute.com

walking and biking for a safer environment

Although I agree that walking and biking will help the environment I'm concerned that people aren't realizing how detrimental to their health these activities can be. I have Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS) and so I must think of this. When I was younger I did enjoy riding my bicycle, but had to quit because of how ill I got from the car and bus fumes. And now I can't even walk for exercise because of all the lawncare chemicals being used. They used to apply these chemicals in the Spring and Fall,,,,,now they apply them as long as the weather is decent. In fact even though I live in PA True Green applied lawn chemicals in the 3rd week of December in 2008, in my area.

Riding bikes and walking means people are breathing in these chemicals on a fairly regular basis. The average person won't be affected immediately, as I am because of MCS, but long term these products are causing many diseases and health concerns.

I'm writing this just so others will be aware of this.
