2X, 3X, 4X… what's with all the Xs in the laundry aisle? Are they something you should get eXcited about? That depends on how eXhausted you get lugging home those big jugs of laundry detergent. And how frustrated you get when you realize a lot of what you're paying for is water.

Say it ain't so! A new study being reported just about everywhere finds (gasp!) that organic foods (no!) are no more nutritious (horror!) than conventional foods (shock!). Media alarms are blaring. Big Agriculture is crowing. Consumers are confused, and just about everyone appears to have forgotten the most important thing of all.

Did you know? The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that 31 tons of plastic waste was generated in 2010, and only 12 percent of the plastic bags, sacks, and wraps created were recycled. Additionally, every school lunch creates an average of 67 pounds of trash per school year. That means, just one average-size middle school creates over 40,000 pounds of lunch waste each year.

When we got our solar water heater, a well-meaning friend cautioned that its unconventional nature might actually detract from our home's value because homebuyers don't like things they aren't used to. He'd heard that on the market, "green" homes are a novelty not worth the premium they cost to create.

We, of course, didn't care. Our home is for us, not some generic future buyer from whom we wish to wring maximum profit. Our goal is sustainable living, whatever it takes.

I was moved by the number of passionate responses I received  to my recent blog post, Can Women Have It All? I heard from women who actually have a "choice" in whether they forgo a career/job in favor of raising a family as well as from women who have no choice but to work one or two jobs and raise a family.
