That sizzle you hear is the sound of summer happily hitting the grill. And while I refuse to mediate the permanent argument between hardwood charcoal purists and true gas-fueled believers, I will say this: When it comes to our health, what matters is not so much where we grill but how we grill when we get there.

We grill, of course, because our inner epicures demand it. Coddled by flame and caressed by smoke, foods blossom into deeply-flavored delicacies. Sadly, they also tend to acquire a toxin load that could reduce our health to ashes.

I grabbed the harmless little creature with a tissue, shook it out the window and went in search of my homemade "spider spray."

Summer is the season to get outdoors and enjoy some fresh air. Yet it's also (oh, cruel irony!) when air pollution peaks in many regions and makes that fresh air hard to find. How should we deal when our city is having a bad air day?

First the good news: there's a whole lot less air pollution than there used to be. According to the EPA, concentrations of the major outdoor air pollutants have fallen dramatically in the last several decades. Carbon monoxide, for example, is down 82% since 1980. Ozone has dropped 28%. And particulates are off 29% since 2000.[1]
