Teaching Our Schools About Toxins

Healthy SchoolsWhat's one of the best ways to celebrate Earth Month? By celebrating National Healthy Schools Day as well. That's Monday, April 26th, and here's why it matters: because we bend over backwards to do whatever it takes to create the environmentally safest home for our kids. Yet at school, some of our kids spend the day surrounded by industrial cleaning chemicals and pesticides, along with flame retardants and other toxins.

Not every school has these problems, but National Healthy Schools Day is the right time to ask if your child's might be one of them.

Don't be deterred if you think it might be a challenging conversation to have with your local school district. This may be the most important thing you'll ever talk about at school. All you need is the opening, and National Healthy Schools Day provides one that's perfect.

Start by using these resources to become informed. Go to your school and share what you learn about the ways unhealthy school environments can affect our children's development, their health, and their ability to learn. Then volunteer to help identify problems and find solutions -- chances are you'll get a lot farther a lot faster if you offer to do the legwork.

Whatever you do, don't give up. We all have the right to ask the difficult questions and insist on better answers. It's one of the most important things we can do as parents. And our kids are counting on us to get it done.
