Lights Out! Welcome to Our Hour of Power

Earth HourThings have started to heat up where the climate crisis is concerned. And just in the nick of time, too, because the scientific community is growing more concerned about global warming. So get ready to spend some time in the dark as you participate in the largest climate movement in history.

Earth Hour takes place on Saturday, March 27th at 8:30 pm local time. At that moment, hundreds of millions of people around the world and some 4,000 cities in 87 countries will turn off their lights for sixty minutes in an international call to stop global warming.

Participation is easy, and we're urging all our friends to join us. All we need to do is turn out our lights for a single hour. The blackness that follows will send a message to Washington and other capitals that it's time to take strong action and make sure that the Earth remains habitable. But we all need to participate for that message to be heard. So gather your loved ones and light some candles, then tell stories, sing songs, and dream of a sustainable world. We can build it if we try.

Talk to your friends and neighbors and urge them to shut off their lights, too. Let's join people from New York City to Shanghai to spark this movement to save the environment. Because this is the hour when we can all make a difference by coming together in a single, simple act. This is the hour when we dissolve all borders to bring lasting change to the world. Let's hit the switch and get that party started.

A Challenge

I think it's going to be a challenge but I made the pledge so I'm going to do it!

Earth Hour

Those who wish to participate-do so. Those of you who think it's all a fool's folly, think what you like. I,for one believe in making a small difference in my life. A billion small differences, creates an enormous movement.

Global whining/ "Earth hour"

I really wish people would wake up and see what a political agenda "global warming" is! It's designed to raise our taxes to the point of ridiculous all "for the children and the planet" (our politicians tell us, as they reach for our wallets).
God gave us resources to USE--not to act like we don't have them! This environmental extremism is becoming wacky. Common sense tells us to use resources wisely, but some people are making the environment a god...whil everything around them, especially the political and moral climate, are falling apart. Time for some people to wake up! We now see very clearly WHY we can't trust the very politicians who are preaching the loudest--and putting us into debt for decades and decades to come!

Global Warming??

I'm sorry, but this global warming thing is really off, in my opinion. I don't think there is any facts in this situation. I will not nor do I participate in any of these activities. I do conserve and that is because I am frugal and don't see a need to waste anything. If more people were just responsible for what they do then there would be fewer problems in all areas.

Earth Hour

Well I missed it and though I don't' want to get caught up in this discussion of the "global warming hoax" I just want to say it is an easy way to save hundreds of dollars off of your electricity bills! Seriously, I can just do this everyday along with other stuff to cut down on energy. Doesn't matter if you don't care for the environment. Just save some money, like we all need to.

Family Fun Time

Our family is looking forward to a fun family night ~ candles, snacks, games and great family time! Our 13 yr old was not very impressed with the idea initially but now has come up with several fun additions to our plan, including a scavenger hunt!

I see this event as only positive ~ it's too bad that junctionb can not do the same. Turning on every light in your house will only increase YOUR power bill. Just as in life, take what is of value to you and leave the rest behind! THERE IS WAY TOO MUCH NEGATIVITY IN THIS WORLD!

I applaud 7gen for providing a newsletter that highlights various projects, ideas, etc for sustainability, allowing each of us as individuals to take what is of value to us and leave behind anything that is not.

an open forum to put forth ideas = GOOD
trying to dictate what that forum should put forth = ?

local time

Local time means whatever time zone you are presently in. If you're in the Pacific Time Zone (say Sacramento) then that means 8:30pm PST. If you're in the Central Time Zone (say Pensacola) then that means 8:30pm CST. I have this same "discussion" every single time with my husband when he's looking at flight times and his itinerary says "all times are local time".

Send a Different Message to Washington

I'm very interested in conserving electricity for my own personal wallet's sake and reduce energy consumption.

I have no desire to send anyone anywhere a message regarding Global Warming.

Our government needs to hear a clear message from us as taxpayers to quit wasteing our tax money on bailouts and [yes I'll say it] "globalwarming hoax" that is being pushed on to the people of this nation and people worldwide.
Let's promote cutting back on toxic chemicals not push this notion that we can control what this earth does.

Please Seventh Generation stick with promoting healthy and environmentally friendly products and stay away from promoting a global warming nonsense agenda.

My 6 Year Old Daughter Last Year When We Did This

At 8:30 - "This is stupid."
At 9:30, after an hour of story telling - "Let's do this every night."

Saving Energy

I'm going to do this to make a statement of saving energy rather than global warming. My kids need to learn to appreciate what we have and what we all take for granted. Get back to the basics of living and take the kids camping.

earth hour

Wouldn't it be neat if enough of us did this to produce a change which could be observed from space? Imagine seeing lights wink out over vast swathes of territory from east to west as the time zones reached 8:30! Wow! A powerful message to all the politicians as to the number of people who are concerned about the health of the earth. I sure hope I don't forget!

Kudos to Earth Hour!

I believe this is a great step in showing humanity to conserve not only power but other items we use on a daily basis and take for granted. I agree with junktionb that everyone should push for cleaner projects. We should all be using eco-friendly cleaning products and using less fossil fuels. Everyone talks and talks but the majority of the people in the US do not take action. We all need to make a life change. No more disposable diapers, no more water wasting washing machines, no more running your appliances all day when not in use. We need to stop being so selfish and wasteful with everything!

What local time?

What time zone are you in? Is this west coast local time?

(BTW - junktionb: get your facts straight and see who's paying those scientists you talk about. Do you still believe those scientists that claimed no connection between smoking tobacco and lung cancer?)

Posted by: junktionb

since scientists from all

since scientists from all religious and ethnic backgrounds are proving global warming to be a HOAX. I will gladly turn on EVERY light in my house.

7gen should stick to making natural products and get away from this political BS that is global warming. the same GW folks were crying global cooling in 70's. it's cyclical.

push for cleaner projects=GOOD. using a made up crisis (GW)=BAD

What will follow? Is there

What will follow? Is there action being proposed to Washington and the government at large? We may be heard but we also need to send a message about what exactly we want done to stop global warming. Maybe Seventh Generation could have some articles about what causes global warming and what steps people can take daily to prevent it.
