What is slate and shale?

I am curios about the chemical components that make up slate and shale. I have been doing a lot of research on green roofing and know that these are 2 different types of inorganic material that make up the medium for the soil on green roofs. What chemical properties do they hold that makes them a good material to use? Is there any other type of material out there that hold the same type of chemical properties that could be substituted?

Thank You!
