We all have our reasons for loving Seventh Generation. My connection with the brand started a few years ago, when I developed chemical sensitivity.
My situation led me into a natural foods market, where I looked for ways to remove toxins from my daily life. For me, it was love at first sight. My loyalty was born the moment I picked up a bottle of Free & Clear hand dish liquid and read the label. It said, "you are making a difference," and went on to tell me that:
- By purchasing this product you are helping to keep toxic chemicals out of our air, our water, and our environment
- Seventh Generation donates a percentage of its profits to organizations working for positive change
- Seventh Generation products are formulated to be safe for your family and the environment
- And then, as if all that were not enough, that quirky little label thanked me for caring about this and the next seven generations.
I knew we would be together forever. I even applied for a job at Seventh Generation, and have been working in our customer marketing department ever since.
Every day I have the privilege of working with committed, passionate and talented people. Now my involvement has given me the honor of representing Seventh Generation in the Breast Cancer Fund's annual mountaineering expedition, The Climb Against the Odds. The climb will take place this June on beautiful Mt. Shasta, a 14,179 foot mountain in Northern California.
It's an important mission and a large responsibility. When Sheila Hollender, Seventh Generation's Women's Health Advocate, asked for a volunteer to climb, she also asked the Seventh Generation community to share stories of friends and family who are battling the disease. When I read these courageous accounts, I cried. It was my first experience with breast cancer. Now, I when I climb Mt. Shasta, I will carry the names of these mothers, sisters, wives, friends, and colleagues with me. The names will appear on a prayer flag provided by The Breast Cancer Fund, whose goal is to raise awareness about ways to prevent breast cancer. The group's programs combine education and activism.
Right now, as I start training for this journey, I'm a bit nervous. I've never climbed a mountain before. But I'm also inspired and excited, and am enjoying the incredible support of the Seventh Generation community. You can help sponsor me by donating to The Breast Cancer Fund.
I thank Seventh Generation for being the type of company that supports these efforts and I thank the Breast Cancer Fund for their tireless work toward prevention. Most of all, I thank those who shared their personal stories with me and for granting me the privilege of carrying prayer flags with the memories of your loved ones up the mountain with me. It is something that I am truly honored to do and when I wave those flags in the wind on Mount Shasta, know that those stories will be in my thoughts and in my heart.
