Cargill Closes Plant in the Amazon
By White Rhino - March 27, 2007
Jeffrey and I were in the Amazon last year and flew over this Cargill plant in Santarém. Our guide was Andre Muggiati from Greenpeace who took us to meet Father Edilberto Sena, the Priest that led the protest to close the plant and whose life was threatened for doing so. It was a deeply poignant story of how a town, inspired and full of determination spoke out and challenged the corporate giant's ethic. Here is the story from ABC News . Also, it is important to say how much Greenpeace played a role in helping the protest take form and continue over the year, leading to the shut down. Thank you Father Ediberto and Greenpeace.
