California Lawmakers Reject BYO Bill

This week, California law makers rejected a bill that would put a statewide ban on all plastic shopping bags and would require shoppers to bring their own reusable tote or purchase a recyclable paper bag. Although the state Senate said no, we can take action into our own hands.

If you’re a Californian who brings your own reusable totes with you when you shop, we want to hear from you! And we want to hear from all Nation members who support the bill. Post your comments below, and we will select 100 Nation members at random to receive a free Seventh Generation tote bag (plus a coupon for Seventh Generation product).

State officials report that Californians use 19 billion plastic bags each year. These bags ultimately end up in a land fill. Let’s make a positive difference and reduce that ghastly number!

Plastic bags are not evil -- only their misuse / overuse is.

Why do we need a counterrevolution to everything. I agree that plastic bags that end up in the trash are harmful. Plastic bags that find other uses once they arrive home, are not. Everything has a legitimate use, and an outright ban like this is never the answer -- it's on overreaction, as too often happens in our environmental circles. For instance, I am now buying kitchen trash bags rather than using the ones from grocery stores. It still amounts to the same plastic output my family has, going to landfills. I am, however, ending up with more unnecessary paper bags, which take more energy to produce than plastic ones. I have no use for paper bags -- I set out my recycling in bins. Therefore, my net energy consumption per family has actually risen. This is an education / behavioral modification issue. I stopped donating to CleanAir.org because they pushed for this ban in Philly.

I can't wait for the day when all plastic bags will be banned in the USA. If Europe can do it, why can't we? There is only one local supermarket in my area that refund 5 cents for each bag we bring in. I wish more stores did that! I work as a cashier at a Walmart store and always ask the customers if they want a bag for their items. I have found that most of the time they will say no :D but if you assume they want one , they will take it:( It is ridiculous how much money is wasted on buying bags for the store. And it is a pet peeve when i see employees throwing plastic bags in the trash that could either be reused or recycled! I also hate it when I forget to bring my own reusable bags, so what I end up doing most of the time is just carrying my items out without bags or in my shopping cart. I don't mind being asked for my receipt on the way out, but some customers don't like to be asked, which is just ridiculous! I wish Walmart gave incentives for more customers to bring their own bags. More stores need to give out free reusable bags to customers also to encourage them to use them.

Charge for bags, don't ban them

Bans just make people dig their heels in to resist while a more gentle prodding can actually change people's minds. At ALDI where you have to buy a store bag, people wheel their carts out to the car without bags, or use the cartons the store displays the food on to tote things out.
So if you forget your reusable bag, just wheel your cart out to your car and unload it there.
Forgot your bags in your car? Maybe you could park your grocery cart and go back out and get them. I did, plenty of times, until I got a habit formed.
Forgetting your bags at home? When you unpack them next time, walk over to the outside door and hang them on the doorknob right away before you forget. Next time you head out the door, whether shopping or not, take them with you and stick them in your car.

If they can do it, we can too!

What happened to America leading the world? And what happened to all the promises and colaborations to make America GREENER? I live in Florida and I think this law should be passed not only in California, but NATION-WIDE. If the bill was proposed in Florida, I'd vote YES. I bring my own bags to the grocery store, and if i forget for some reason, I kindly refuse the plastic and just stick the items in my daughter's diaper bag.

In Germany, you don't have the option. It's just: bring your own bags. In CHINA you can either bring your own bags, or you pay a hefty price for paper bags at the store. Now, I know Germany is a leader in being green, but if CHINA--one of the world's greatest producer of greenhouse gases and pollution--can make their people want to bring their own bags, then why can't we, America (as a WHOLE, not just California) do it?

Really, I teach my 7 month old daughter about the trees in our back yard, I put the recyclables in her hands so SHE can learn to drop them in the recycle bins, and I try to teach her how great the world is but it will only stay great if we take care of it. But, if law-makers shoot down great strides like this, what is THAT teaching her? I'm so glad she's not yet old enough to understand what it means that they denied the passing of this law. But, what happens when she IS old enough? Will everything I try to teach her go to waste and be replaced by what she hears everyone doing, when she hears what these people that she should look up to are doing?

This law should have been passed. It should have been made nation-wide. If we're such leaders in the world, then why were we beat to the punch by Germany? Why did CHINA make the change first? What will this mean for the world? What will it mean for the CHILDREN?

Bring your own bags, regardless of if law-makers are making you or not. Because just because you don't have to pay for plastic, doesn't mean you can be selfish and irresponsible.

Charge for Bags!

I think that we should take the practice of a 5 cent rebate for reusable bags and do the opposite for plastic. 5 cents times the average family's grocery shopping can be almost a dollar extra. And in these tough times I am sure lots of families are watching every penny. I don't think that a government ban is the way to go, but do make it harder to use plastic. Also, the Goodwill and other organizations are using biodegradable plastics for their bags. Why can't others do the same?

Plastic Bags are Horrible

I have been buying the reusable cloth bags, we are a large family and end up with too many plastic bags. They should get rid of plastic and give people who a few reusable bags to start with!

Better Bags

I love to bring my own bags to the store! I can fit a ton of stuff in my super sturdy bags which means less bags to carry. Yes - the bags may be heavier since I load them up but really, I'm only carrying them a short distance.

The right way to pack bags

As a Californian living in Texas, I was shocked by how many plastic bags one grocery chain in particular seems to use. One bag for bread, one bag for eggs...recently the checker gave one tiny bag of specialty salt it's very own grocery bag! Seriously, it was so ridiculous I took a picture of it!

I happily take my thermal or cloth bags shopping and that little 5 cent discount each is a nice thank you from the store. I appreciate that many stores carry cloth bags, ask you if you brought your own, or have stopped bags all together and use left over shipping boxes. Personally, I think that's better than regulation since it's the customers' attitude that's the heart of the matter.

europe yet again is ahead of us

From what I hear, in say Britain, not only are you required to BYO bags but also bag your own groceries. I've long been a supporter of this. Oftentimes, hoofing it a mile or so to the distant more appealing grovery chain where I could find my natural and organic products, saving on gas or bus fare and getting a decent workout all at the same time. When faced with purchasing bags if you forget your bags, I think people will quickly catch on.

Plastic, Paper or Reusable ? That Is The Question.

Whom amoung us aren't bombarded with an overflow of plastic bags that generally have no useful purpose after they bring your groceries home?Reuse? some do.Recycle?Again some do, but we are lazy by nature and who wants to gather them up, put them in a car and drive to a market that may or may not have a recyling program.Throw them away? None of us want to do that so we are at a crossroads.BYOB is a novel idea but we are always forgetting them in the car, in the house or what if we overbuy? I personally prefer reusable bags they are stronger, carry more and even those that keep frozen stuff, well frozen. I am a cashier at a high volume, pack your own groceries, store and people are adapting, slowly, but more customers are using reusable bags. The store I work has a discount for each of your own bags you use.I know of only one other store in my town that does this, humans not only lazy by nature we are greedy too, to save 6 cents per bag people will do it.Especially during tough economic times. As for the people who may lose thier jobs that make plastic bags I hope they will find work fast for thier families sake. Is it fair to charge people to use a bag? Well my momma has always said "life isn't fair." If we just imagine the mountain of plastic bags each of us collect what what the mountain look like of millions of peoples bags. The change starts with each of us.We can make make a change.

I get paid for my cloth bags

My guess CA didn't pass the law right now is because of the economy and potential loss of more jobs. I am from the other coast and have been using cloth bags for years. Approximately 5 years ago I stopped getting funny looks from people and the question "What part of Europe are you from?" Sorry born in the USA baby.

Now I get people commenting that they need to start using cloth bags and our grocery stores are paying us 5 cents a bag at check out. It might not seem like much I would prefer the penny to be in my pocket and not someone elses.

I started keeping track in March as to how much I have saved my family just in grocery bags. As of today it is about $25.00. Cost of a movie and popcorn.

When the store wants to put my meat in a plastic bag...I ask them not to because it defeats the purpose of using cloth bags (which can go in the washer with other laundry).

Woops, forgot my green bag

I think we all agree that Green bags are the Only way to shop, but for those times when you over spend or forget your bags here are a few ideas:

Collect your plastic bags and return them to a responsible store that recycles them. REMEMBER to remove receipts and tags from all plastic bags, this hampers the recycling process. Also sort plastics by type. Not all plastics mix well together (they can be of different materials and melt index) and to aid in the recycling process, bundle like kind of bags together, removing paper inserts, drawstrings and other non-plastic materials. Then you can feel better about your plastic purchase indiscretions.

Sacramento reusable bags

I wrote a letter to my congresspeople to abolish plastic bags and I believe that saving the earth is far more important than padding a rich person's wallet. The Chemical companies lobbied hard and with perks, so it is just another progressive, responsible thing that California is not good at. California is beoming a very depressing state to live in.

Canvas bags

My mom started using canvas bags over 15 years ago and I also have been using them ever since I left her house 13 years ago. Imagine the looks she got back then when she started bringing her own bags. She had many a bagger put the groceries in plastic bags first and then into the canvas so that they would "remain clean". One year for christmas she hand painted canvas bags for friends and familys' presents. She has set such a great pioneering example to me and the rest of our family that it is a compulsion for me to reduce my impact on the planet. I love that she was so far ahead of the times and even now if she happens for foget her bags (very rarely) she only uses paper because it decomposes. This law may not have passed this time but it is huge progress from 15 years ago. Hopefully 15 years from now all of the states will have passed similar laws.

Reuse, reuse, reuse

We've been using some of the same paper bags now for going on 10 years (from back when Wild Oats opened in Long Beach, CA). We double-bag to start with and the bags seem to just keep on going and going and going. We have a box in the garage, along with a cooler, that goes into the car before we make the trek to the farmer's market & Whole Foods each week. I even reuse the plastic bags I gather from Whole Foods, not only there but at the farmer's market also. I take a small container so that the lettuce vendor can use it for the flowers I purchase from him. Whole Foods does give me 5 cents for each bag I reuse, but that is not the reason I do it. I do it because I simply don't need anymore bags to store or simply throw out. No matter what store I go to, if possible, I walk out without a bag. It just makes sense! We even have several "cooler" bags. It helps that we own a promotional advertising business (PeckPromo.com) and are constantly getting in sample bags -- but I would purchase what I needed if I didn't have the free bags. One of my carpoolers even goes to Costo with her 2 Costco bags -- if it doesn't fit within them, she doesn't buy it (of course, she does walk to the store).

Grrrrrr

It pains me greatly to see people using plastic bags and paper bags when they shop. My roommates know better than to come home with anything other than reusable shopping bags and I'm thankful for their efforts to minimize their carbon footprints, even if it is more to avoid my wrath than for the environment. But really, it drives me batty to see such waste when reusable bags are not only better for the environment, but they're so much easier/sturdier to fill up and carry your groceries! You can cut down on trips from your trunk to your kitchen by using reusable bags! I hope we can pass this law!

Posted by: Kristy C.

The entire country should

The entire country should ban the use of plastic bags or atleast make a fine so large that if you dont have them on you you might as well purchase reusable bags for half the price of the fine. Why not?

Posted by: klampkin

Plastic Bags

I agree that plastic bags are harmful to children, but as responsible adults we should try to keep them out of reach. We store ours in the garage where only adults can reach. They have come in handy when need to throw away a dirty diaper. (As we do not have a diaper genie) We also use for cleaning out the fridge. Our neighborhood does not allow composte sites. If we were to do away with plastic bags, then we would be putting people out of work in this tough economy. It would be a cycle that seems to not end. Would it creat more jobs if we all starting using green bags? That's a thought.
With that said. I do use green bags when I go shopping for several reasons. To help the planet and most places give you a discount for every bag you use. I use them when I have to take things to other's homes. Of course I end up leaving and have to buy more bags.

We should all do our part to help our planet not be over run with garbage by recycling as much as we can. Most cities it's free.

Take REsponsibility: Use REusable Bags

I don't live in California, but I support the bill. In fact, if I forget my reusable bags when I'm grocery shopping, I only buy what I can carry out to my car by hand! Really. I believe in taking responsibility for our planet.

Stop the overuse of plastic bags!

I live in California in the heart of Silicon Valley. I consider myself to be quite eco-friendly. I have been using reusable bags before they were cool!. To put it this way, I'm 31 and I have been using them since I could buy stuff at the store. My Mom always used them, so thats what I thought you did. When I was a pre-teen I loved having to sort our recyclables, and learn about how to recycle.
Now that I am an adult and have a daughter of my own, I want her to grow up in healthy planet. Some of the stores I shop at over-use plastic bags. I see cashiers putting one or two items in a bag then getting another one. I see peoples carts overflowing with plastic bags, and all I can think is I hope this people recycle them, and sadly the answer is most likely No! I believe peoples excuse that it is too hard to remember or its just too much work, is pure laziness. People these days would never forget to bring their cell phone with them, so why can't we remember to bring a bag with us???
When I saw that this bill was coming up to a vote, I knew deep down it would not pass, its too extreme for politicians to approve. The problem with our government, is that they are afraid to put bills into action like this because they are unpopular with some of the voters and the big companies, like the Plastic Association. They have big money, and can influence the vote. This is just wrong! I'm not sure what the compromise is, but something needs to be done. The amount of plastic bags that are thrown away is disgraceful, and our planet deserves better!

The Nanny State

The Nanny State strikes again. Rather than mandating that everyone either bring their own bags or purchase reusable bags, everyone who supports legislating personal behavior should volunteer to add 10% to their grocery bill to pay for reusable bags for the "less fortunate" and for those who feel that excessive government intervention will stifle business and free choice as a whole.

Rather than mandating your pet projects, strongly encourage others to follow you using logic and common sense.

plastic bags

I don't feel comfortable plastic bags at all, every time I saw at store and even see the peoples are carrying the bags since they're not environmental friendly. I feel all store simply should not use plastic bags and tell them using them is how does it affect on our earth. I see my favorite organic store still use small plastic bags for vegetables as they are wet and paper bags are weak for them , except for small paper bags for fruits.I carry my big reusable bags and small mesh bags for shopping as much as I can.

Posted by: Janna

ReUsable Bags

I have a bunch of reusable bags I bring shopping with me. Publix even had some reusable mesh bags for produce, so I was able to eliminate all the tiny plastic bags from bringing home fruit and vegetables! I keep hearing they're doing away with them, and really hope they do. Even if you're not Green the bags just pile up if you save them for other uses! Obnoxious

plastic bags

Blondie4LA

I've started a collection of shopping bags and I use my own bags whenever possible. My grocery store issues a 5 cent credit for each bag I supply and the only thing one must remember is: Wash your bags after multiple uses. But my question is, does the energy used to wash the bags - soap, water, sewage disposal of waste water, carbon footprint involved in purchasing the bags, delivery of the bags, etc, etc, more efficient than paper bags supplied by the market?

Posted by: AMH7983

Reusable bags

I use my reusable bags all the time. I use them in grocery stores and when I go to the local farmer's market. I think stores should start charging money for plastic and paper. I think it's something that a lot of people take for granted and need to be more aware of.

12 boxes of bags a week

I work in retail at a rather small store, we use 12 boxes of bags a week, each box contains 1000 bags. It is not that difficult to bring your own bags but the sad case is if it is not law people will not do it. Customers act as though we are required to give them bags, as if that is the law. Our company is even going through a measure to stop the amount of bags being used and re-training cashiers on how to bag, it not only helps the planet but it helps the bottom line those plastic bags are expensive from a commercial stand point too, and they have told us to refuse double bags unless it is absolutely neccessary. Bottom line 12,000 bags for 5000 customers is excessive and painful.

Reusable bags to share!

I try to bring my reusable bags everywhere I go. In fact, I have so many of them that I give some of them to family and friends who don't have any. I keep some in my car so it's handy.
I love the bigger ones because they hold so much more and you'll only need one or two of them when you're shopping.
Hopefully one of these days the bill will pass.

Great idea!

California is always way ahead of the rest of us when it comes to the environment! I think this is a great idea! I love my totes, so easy to use - they are sturdy and they hold SO much more! I even have reusable bags for produce (got them on Etsy.com, I love Etsy!) which I love too!

Reusable Totes

I love bringing my own reuseable totes to the store. I love our local Co-Op grocery store here in Eureka, California, they have a sign outside their doors saying, "Did you remember your bag?" Love it love it love it!

Let's Start a Trend

I grew up in Germany in the 80s and German stores made you pay for bags or bring your own. I think it's time for Americans to follow in the Germans' super green footsteps and start charging for bags and outlawing plastic. After all, Germany was doing this over twenty years ago. And someone has to do it here first, so it might as well be California. Then, with time and luck, all other states will eventually follow suit.

Excellent idea. My daughter and I have been using these for at least a year - since our respective grocers (In upper NY State and Florida)started distributing them.

~~& on another note we have been recycling since the 70's even though at that time when we lived in Pa. we had to drive 15 miles across town to do it.

In France it is mandatory

In France it is mandatory that people bring their own bags because they don't produce bags for the grocery stores. It is expected that you bring your own. Maybe we in the US are not ready for it but I believe that it shouldn't be an "option" because the plastic bags use nonrenewable resources and we just can't keep going the way we are. At our local EarthFare, if you forget to bring your reusable bags they use old packing materials such as boxes for you to take home. I think other stores should adopt the same policy because it is easy to forget, and if we have the materials on hand they should be used.

BYO Bill

I remember probably 15yrs. ago my parents started using cloth bags at the grocery store, so it has always instilled in me the necessity to recycle and re-use! I think the bill was at least a great idea and a starting point for every other state to get in the "Green" mode. A lot of stores have started offering kick-backs for bringing your plastic bags back with you, which is again, at least a starting point. Unfortunately, this is going to be one of those baby-step processes before there is a big enough following to be heard.

If you haven't already, please check out the link to send your state representative the letter asking to pass a bill for stronger regulations on cleanig supplies! It's a great cause, and 7th Generation has a bunch of great info. about it!

Sustainability

Why must the US stay behind. Other countries have already enacted laws banning the use of plastic bags. Not only the landfill crisis, but the use of oil and estrogen in our overuse of plastic is making America sick. Please see the plastic bag video and read about what oil/plastic/estrogen is doing to us. Even without a law it is imperative that we put out strong messages to become a healthier nation. There are many, many steps we can take and one of them is using our own recycled bags.

Posted by: shopdiva

This should be nationwide

Visiting other countries has helped me to realize how wasteful Americans can be. We all can contribute to make the environment and this world a better place. I don't live in CA, but I carry my own bags with me everywhere I go to shop. No need to "collect" more bags just to throw them out. We need to conserve and appreciate our resources.

Posted by: maritzapearl

Carry your own shopping bag

I thought it would be inconvenient to carry one (or more) fabric shopping bag(s), but in truth I carry so much gear every day that it is actually an advantage to have several totes. Rolled up or folded, and stashed where I can easily pull them out at the check-out counter, they launder easily and look as good as new.

It's certainly the easiest thing I can do to reduce non-compostable waste. I can't see that it would be a great inconvenience if it became mandatory.

RE: Using canvas totes

I don't live in CA but I use canvas tote bags whenever and where-ever I shop. I think each state should ban the use of plastic bags, they are not only harmful to the environment but pose a choking hazard as well.

Retailer Incentives Work

Retailers are learning that incenting buyers to use their own bags works. If I am getting .05 - .10 credit for each bag I use, I am more likely to bring my own bag. But on those days when I don't have a bag with me, I like the option of having the retailer supply a plastic bag. I reuse the plastic bags as trash can liners.

Posted by: GRISW

No more plastic should be a habit

Yes it takes time to get use to but after the 3rd week I use reusable bags, have not have a problem unless is an unexpected trip, since I don't usually carry any in my car. I think first of all with the example, I have seen the numbers of shoppers with reusable bags in my supermarket, when I started 4 years a go there was not many around and saw some pointing at my bags while shopping around. Law, yes is always a bug push and agree with it, but still plenty of people break the law nowadays in the most insignificant ways, incentives... I agree might work better. Extra discount even if is tiny most of us are pinching pennies where we can. And the cost of the bags... well 99c and I just paid for the first 3, I have more than double the amount now and they have been free, with promotions on sales and products.
We need to make it a good habit!

Posted by: theresdoug

The law is good!

I was pulling for the law to pass in CA because it had the potential to start a trend. I would love to see a similar law passed in PA, but we're just not there, yet. My husband and I religiously take our reusable totes shopping regardless of where we are going, and I always have my small Chico tote (folds up into a fist-sized ball and fits in any purse) with me for those spur of the moment trips that just can't be avoided.

There is nothing saying that we have to wait for a law, though. We can ban plastic one household at a time using everyone's favorite economic principle of Supply and Demand. The consumer voice is powerful. If we stop using the plastic bags, then the need to supply goes away. We can also start with our local stores. Talk to the owners and get them to move away from plastic on their own.

If you're not convinced, do some internet research on the trash floating in the Pacific Ocean and destroying beaches on the islands. It will make you sick, trust me. This is a simple act that can change everything. If we start now, maybe our kids may still know a time when plastic bags were just not available.

Think about it!

Posted by: hrj75

Just say NO to plastic

There is no excuse for people to continue using plastic bags! Everyone should use reusable and every store should be able to charge you for not using them! I am very proud that my entire family has gone reusable. We all have a good supply. Most of us even keep some in our car at all times, just in case.

This Ohioan is FOR the CA law!

I so wish this law would have passed and I wish it would pass in my home state of Ohio and my birth state of WV! I think reusing everything you can and recycling everything you can and donating and buying used etc. is so important, and reusable bags are a huge part of this! I have used reusable bags for years now and am thrilled to see more and more people making that choice at stores all over the place.

What are people thinking by not passing this bill?I am all for bringing my own bag to the grocery store. This is such a small thing to do for the environment.:/

Posted by: bellessakhi

California is usually ahead of the curve, but not this time

It is disappointing to hear this bill failed. California is usually setting the standards for "green" practices, but this was one big step back.

I am on assignment in Ireland and they have had their own BYO for years and it works great and saves the environment. Even in the Washington D.C. metro area just this year enacted a law charging for plastic bags to encourage BYO.
