A few weeks ago I came down with whatever cold it is that's been going around, and I had to cancel some plans. So the friend I canceled on had a few things delivered to my house from a fancy food shop: a perfectly soft roast chicken, some mildly spicy corn, and a pint of one of the strongest medicines known to humankind: matzo ball soup.

Valentine's Day is coming! If you're a parent, this day is no longer about chocolate, roses, and Champagne with your honey. It's about helping your kids spread some love to friends and family with cute cards, crafts, and candy. Adorable and fun, yes, but not always eco-friendly. There's huge news from the nation's cleaning product cupboard: Procter & Gamble, one of the biggest cleaner companies on the block, is reformulating Tide and Tide Free & Gentle laundry detergents so they contain much less of a troubling toxin called 1,4-dioxane.

This is a happy moment for consumers and for us, too. A whole lot of laundry is about to get a whole lot less worrisome, and here on our own home front, we feel like we've won a tremendous personal victory.

Recently, I attended a dinner party where the host was serving a dish made of leeks. It was the first time in my life that I'd had leeks as a focus of a dish instead of something just diced into a larger dish, and it made me rethink this sweet little vegetable as more than just a flavoring.
