by Brian Williams, Principal, Sustainability Academy

Something wonderful happened on May 1st at the Sustainability Academy when more than 80 volunteers from Seventh Generation came to our school for a day of service. Walking to SA from their headquarters by the waterfront, they grabbed a healthy snack, put on sunscreen, heard some inspirational words from Mayor Miro Weinberger, broke up into teams organized by Seventh Gen’s Justin Beaulieu, and commenced beautifying our campus.

Blueberries are a sweet summertime treat that are also a helpful weight-loss aid. The juicy morsels are full of fiber, which helps you feel satisfied after eating, and which can help flush out your system so you don't get bloated. They also contain phytochemical C3G, which research suggest may help increase fat metabolism and stir up production of leptin, which decreases appetite.

Other benefits of blueberries are the vitamin C and antioxidants present, both of which help fight off cell-damaging free radicals, thereby helping to prevent illnesses such as cancer and diabetes.

Treat yourself. I know it sounds farfetched—unheard of, even—but with a bit of planning and preparation, in just one day, you can experience Tahitian beach level relaxation in your own home.

Relaxation is about more than kicking back; it's about taking the time to treat yourself. In the case of a home spa day, it's about feeling calm, fresh and revitalized. And it’s about capturing these feelings with natural products and treatments in a way that also pampers you, your living home and our Earth.

Every few months, my daughter Chloe and I go through her toy box and book shelf to purge things she's outgrown or doesn't play with. I hope to instill in her the importance of giving (and also encourage her not to hoard stuff). The trouble? Not only does Chloe occasionally beg to keep certain toys for which she's suddenly sentimental, but I've also discovered that donating used kids toys is surprisingly difficult. A lot of places just won’t take them.

Spring inspires fresh starts, whether it's revamping your wardrobe or starting a new exercise routine. This desire to renew and refresh extends to the home, too. Warm spring air inspires spring cleaning, new beginnings, and sometimes, redecorating.

I like decorating, but I don't like filling my house with lots of clutter. Yet every time I want to redecorate a little, I find myself buying yet more stuff, whether it's a new knickknack or end table. And I also don't like the price tag that can come with redecorating.

I hold a general policy of "if you want to make something better, melt some cheese all over it." And when it comes to spinach, this definitely holds true. Spinach tends to be seen as one of the more serious, un-fun foods. Even the popular Popeye cartoons showed the character hating spinach but agreeing to eat it in order to boost his strength.

There's no menu in which fish do not loom large. Chefs live to net a good special. Dieters love their low-fat protein. Doctors dig their healthy omega-3s. And most of the rest of us load up because fish just taste so darn good. But here's the catch: The world's stocks are fished-out, mercury-infused, and sinking fast.

Spring has finally arrived in Northern Vermont – well, at least it's trying. We still have our share of 30 degree nights, but oh those 60+ degree days! They hint of the incredible Vermont summer to come and turn my thoughts to one of my favorite summer treats – ice cream.

Imagine that random strangers have keys to all the rooms in your home and enter at all hours, turning stuff on and off, rearranging furniture, locking you out, and leaving a mess. Now imagine that in your body. That's endocrine disruption, and the U.N. says it's now a serious global threat.

I have a confession: I know nothing about gardening.

I know. Talk about a key component to being green. I should at least be a rookie gardener, right? I should at least grow herbs or something easy, right? Nope and nope. I've wanted to get into herb and vegetable gardening for a long time, but I just haven't gotten around to it.

Until now.
