What is the best way to dispose of the "not so green" detergents I still have in the house?

Dear Besenok:
Although it was not done in a "green" way, a lot of energy and materials went into the "not so green" cleaning products you have. If they are not immediately hazardous (like chlorine bleach or spray cleaners with 2-butoxyethanol) the most environmental thing to do with them is to use them and buy more environmental products when the ones you have are gone.
If the products are potentially harmful and you do not wish to use them in your home, they should be taken to a household hazardous waste center for disposal. If such a center is not available and you live in an area that has a municipal wastewater treatment facility, flush them down the drain with plenty of water. Most wastewater treatment facilities are designed to handle a reasonable loading of conventional household detergents. However, it is likely that some of the materials used will not fully degrade and will be released into the environment either as part of the treatment plant effluent or absorbed on the treatment plant sludge.
Obviously, this last option is the least desirable, and should be used only as a last resort. If you have a home septic system, disposing of potentially harmful materials down the drain is not recommended.
