Plywood contains formaldehyde in the glue that holds it together, and the formaldehyde vaporizes over time, I understand, which is not great for your indoor air (or your mattress I would think). So is there any alternative to using a sheet of plywood between the mattress and box spring to firm up a mattress that is too soft?

my wife and I have been
my wife and I have been looking at mattresses for the last few weeks. And finally decided to go with one of those memory foam mattresses you see on tv. We put a mattresses pad over it and can't believe the difference it makes. It's like sleeping in a suite at a luxury hotel.
Buy a new one
I would buy a new firmer mattress and take advantage of the at ebed.com.
