I am very particular about bringing toxic products into my home, but the one thing that I have not been able to give up is my quarterly pest control service. Although I realize that this is one of the worst exposures my family encounters, we live in a rural area, and I can't stand the thought of the outside creatures being inside my house. Does anyone know of a safe and effective pesticide that I can spray myself? I am willing to buy or make it as long as it really works.

Depends on the pest, pest control.
I use Orange Guard for inside and some outside spraying. Not toxic to us or pets. Mice and ants also don't like peppermint. A mixture of soap and peppermint oil sprayed around areas they like to get in is a deterrent. These need to be applied more regularly because they don't last like the toxic stuff.
Curious as well
If you find out, please let me know as well!
I don't know about spray
I don't know about spray products, but I use borax as an insect preventative.
