By the end of winter, the only thing in rougher shape than my budget is my feet! What emerges after nearly nine months of shoes, boots, socks and such is not a pretty sight. Rather than springing for a pricey pedicure, I treat myself to a relaxing little escape with these five easy steps:
Soak. Always start by removing old polish, then add ½ cup of Epsom salt to a tub of warm water. Relax and let your feet soak for at least 20 minutes. If you are pregnant or have any health concerns, check with your doctor before using Epsom salts.
Scrub. While your feet are soaking, rub away any callouses using a pumice stone, or try mixing a handful of Epsom salt with a tablespoon of olive oil. Rub all over rough feet to exfoliate and soften. I like to do this in stages: scrub a little, relax a little, scrub a little more. This is also a good time to clean any dirt from under your nails with an orange stick
Soften. Rinse your feet thoroughly, then slather on a rich moisturizer like Shea or coconut butter, and rub in thoroughly to lock in the moisture. If you're really feeling indulgent, slather on a little extra moisture, wrap your feet in a warm towel and relax for another 10 minutes.
Shape Up. Clip your nails straight across before filing. Don't cut into the corners of your nails, and never, ever cut your cuticles! They help keep germs away from your skin and nails.
Shine. Use a base coat to prevent yellowing and a top coat after to help your pedi last longer. If polish isn't your thing, lightly rough the surface of your nails with a nail file and then use a nail buffer for a beautiful, natural shine.
One Last Tip: Protect your feet with sunscreen. The skin on the tops of your feet is thin and after being undercover all winter, feet are especially prone to sunburn.
