Effectiveness of kitchen hoods

So my father-in-law is obsessed about having the hood over the stove on every time anyone is cooking something, he claims it sucks all the hot air and it's more effective when having the a/c on, I just wonder how effective and energy efficient they really are, I'd love to tell him they waste more energy than they actually save.
