Can anyone recommend a good way to clean set-in stains from my white carpet? I have a small steam cleaner, but I mostly use it for quick clean-ups like a fresh spill. I am also concerned about killing dust mites. Would the steam alone do the job?

My name is Bill Rathbun owner of Bill's Janitorial LLC in Colorado Springs CO. not all stains can be cleaned the same way. Oxyclean by it self is very very good and works on many stains whoever it is less effect when mixed with vinegar. Beter way to use the Oxyclean is to mix some in cool to warm water. wet the stain and then cover with a white cloth then heat with a iron making sure you do not touch any dry carpet fiber with the hot iron it will melt most fibers if dry. Check stain often to prevent over heating. Reapply oxyclean if needed. After the stain fades use the vinegar to rinse the oxyclean. You may also substitute Hydrogen Peroxide for the oxyclean and no rinse is needed. PLEASE see this link for a better understanding of stains and how to clean them
I use a combination of Oxyclean and vinegar in a spray bottle. One Tsp Oxy with 1/4 c Vinegar adding water to top of bottle (there will be a lot of foaming, so blend this in sink). Spray on stain, then blot up with paper toweling until dry. If stain persists, try another application. Haven't met a stain this doesn't take care of. Then I dry the paper toweling to use for cleaning floor spills or other rough cleaning before tossing (depends, of course, on what you've blotted up before).
i"ve been told that the dampness remaining from steam cleaning may not kill them...i have balked at 'chem-clean'. does anyone know if diatomatious earth kills dust mites, or only fleas? what about adding vinegar to steam-clean liquid?
