Carbon Calculator

Scientists tell us that we have a narrow window to prevent the most disastrous changes to our climate. In addition to lobbying public officials for government intervention, we believe that individuals and households can and should take meaningful action to reduce their own greenhouse gas carbon emissions.

Our carbon calculator provides a fast and easy to use way for you to estimate your estimate personal greenhouse gas emissions. Once you've completed your estimate, you can figure out where you stand relative to the U.S. "average" emissions per person and look at strategies to save money and reduce your footprint.

Our carbon calculator covers a number of activites that generate or reduce one's greenhouse gas emissions: home energy, air transportation, vehicle travel, and recycling.

  • Home energy emissions from use of electricity, propane, natural gas and heating oil.
  • Air Transportation emissions from commercial plane travel.
  • Vehicle Travel emissions from car or truck travel
  • Solid Waste and Recycling emissions from household waste and recycling efforts.

Directions for Using the Calculator

To begin the calculation, enter the number of people who live in your household. This number will be used to compare your household footprint with a similarly sized "average" household footprint

Next, enter your household fossil fuel use including any use of propane, natural gas, heating oil, and electricity. You can choose to enter either monthly or annual use. Consult the FAQ section for tips on gathering this data.

For air travel, enter the total miles flown by persons in your household here. Consult the FAQ section for tips on estimating the number of miles you've flown.

Lastly, enter the total miles driven by all cars in your household. Again, the FAQ section contains tips in finding data and provides detail on the assumptions that underlie the calculations used to estimate your footprint.
