Automatic Dishwashing Soap Not Cleaning Well

Posted March 16th, 2009 by jemz10

I have been using Seventh Generation powdered dishwashing soap for a couple of years without any issues. However, I recently moved into a house with a new GE dishwasher. It does not dissolve the powedered soap. So I tried the SG liquid, and it does not clean the dishes. And I am not talking a few spots, but actually food remaining on the dishes. We tried turning our water temp up and using softer water. A friend with the same dishwasher said she had the same issue with any dish soap except Cascade power packs. I am thinking this cannot be the only solution. If you have any solutions please let me know.

I've noticed the same thing except my dishwasher hasn't changed. I've had to run the cycle two or three times just to get things clean. I did read that the water jet on the bottom must not be blocked, but keeping this clear still doesn't seem to help. Did the formula change or something?

I know I have the same

I know I have the same problem, I like that it is a green product but I feel as though I am wasting to much water. I might need to switch to a new green product for dishwashers.

Help is on the way

Hi those of you who have experienced unsatisfactory results with our auto dish products. FIRST, I am sorry that you have had such a problem and I will be glad to offer some solutions for you. If you have hard water, products without phosphates will need to be used in full capacity with a rinse aid, which we have just added to our product line. Also, natural auto dish products don't work well with really rinsed dishes, they need to cling to the soils on your dinnerware, or they will not work as well. If you have soft water, you will not want to use as much. If none of this solutions work, please contact our consumer insight team, so that they can problem solve, suggest other products and generally satisfy your expectations with our products. Sue

I used this same product without satisfactory results. I then read the reviews of all dishwasher powders in Consumer Reports. Alas the powder that Trader Joes sells came out on top and even performed as well as those containing phosphates. So I bought a box and haven't looked back sense. Sorry to be a trader to your product but it just doesn't work as well and I don't need a rinse aid. Maybe you should look at what trader joes is doing.

Same problem but I have soft tapwater

... or at least soft enough that I rarely see calcium scale on my faucet nozzles.

I am finding substantial food residue, and because the dishwasher runs fairly warm water (60 deg. C), I end up with caked on food residue which is difficult to remove. This happens on anything that is not completely pre-washed.

Past experience with just a few drops of hand-washing dish detergent was actually much better. In the past, I had used small amounts of major brand liquid hand-wash dish soap in rinse-only cycles. This was geothermal water in an old-design Kitchenaid, but I would still have expected better results than that augmented rinse cycle. I would still run a full wash afterwards, but never had food residue problems except maybe egg.

My point is that this is far worse than almost-no-soap in a rinse cycle.

The dishwasher -- a White-Westinghouse -- is not the newest low-water-use design but is not an antique. (It's at least newer than that old Kitchenaid.) The problem is that the detergent not only doesn't work, but actually creates work on any dish which is not already pre-washed.

I give up! If something needs to be done with wastewater, it will have to be done with effective tertiary wastewater systems (although I suspect we already have that here). Caked on food is too much "over-the-top".

I personally have not tried this product yet, but sometimes I try to add a capful or two of vinegar to my dishwasher before running it and it helps when using any dishwashing soap.

I stopped using this product...

I use other Seventh Generation products happily, but have had to stop using the dish soap. It has clogged no less than three of our dishwashers (we rent and have tested this theory across time and houses). I do not understand what is in the dishwashing detergent that does this, but it should not be so user-unfriendly.
