I purchased a bottle of this and had trouble with it having large amounts of residue left behind in the softener compartment of my washer. Seventh Generation replaced this bottle (GREAT customer service), but noticed the new bottles smelled almost as if they "soured" or something. This odor caused me to donate them to a worthy cause, and I will go to the store that I purchased my original bottle from to see if the odor is in those bottles as well. If so, I will not be able to use this particular product. Even though it is "free and clear", if it is going to have a new, "sour" smell, I do not think many would want to try this.
